Ship collectors marvel at the different scratch built versions of Pacific Tall Ships. Enhance your ship collection with any of these oldest frigates! The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. Built by the famous US shipbuilder Joshua Humphreys, she was designed larger and stronger than the standard Frigates. She slid from the ways at Edmund Hart's shipyard in Boston on October 21, 1797. She measured 204 ft., bow to stern, and had a complement of 400 to 450 aboard. In the Barbary Wars, the Constitution first saw action as the US Navy flagship in the attack on Tripoli on August 3, 1804. During the War of 1812, she scored stunning victories over British opponents. It was then that she became a naval living legend; a battleship able to deal out and take the heaviest blows. She was nicknamed "Old Ironsides" by a soldier, after seeing a shot from HMS Guerriere bounce off her hull. At present, she is berthed in Charlestown, Massachusetts at the Boston National Historical Park.
