The Santa Maria was the ship of the navigator Christopher Columbus who in 1492 discovered the New World. What were the ships of the great discovery of the new world like? Tradition always speaks of three caravels, sort of swift ships with a light hull, several masts and different sorts of sails. Santa maria is a type of swift ship with 3 masts, 2 square sails and a lateen one, provided with a foredeck, which makes it rather belonging to the class of the Caravel. The strong construction, together with the nautical knowledge of the time and the keen perception of its great sailors allowed such a great enterprise.
