The Sovereign of the Seas was built by King Charles I in 1637 and was larger and more powerful than any other ship of her time. With 104 guns and 800 men aboard, she had the ability to fire a broadside of more than a ton of metal. She reigned the seas for over 60 years without any enemy being able to sink her, but she came to a fiery end on January 29, 1697 from a candle left unattended by the ship cook. |
