The splendid Soleil Royale (Royal Sun) was launched at the Port of Brest in 1669, during the reign of Louis the XIV. With a figurehead of a golden mermaid holding a golden orb and her stern adorned with three golden crown lanterns this mighty three-decker was the pride of the new French Navy. With 104 bronzed cannons and her unsurpassed speed and maneuverability, she reigned superior to all in the war against the Hapsburgs.
