The authentic Mississippi paddlewheel steamboats were jacks of all trades. They served as the lifeline for cotton and inland trade, towed barges and ferried railroad trains across the river. The Mississippi boat showcased 1848 steam powered stern wheel and paddle wheel. The Mississippi was completed in 1842 with a graceful wooden hull, barque rigs, and 1,765 square meters of canvas. Her steam engine provided its motive force via two-sided mounted paddle wheels, making her a good sailor, performing equally well under sail or steam. She served in the Mexican War of 1847, and the American Civil War under Admiral Farragut's Mississippi river squadron. In 1863 she was set on fire after having run aground at Port Hudson. |
