| H.M.S. Beagle was built in 1817. It belongs to class Barque where it was first used as a coasting vessel and then subsequently equipped for scientific observations which led it across the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. A mizzen mast was added, so that the ship could be more easily steered along the coral-reefs of the pacific islands, thus transforming Beagle into a Barque. On December 27, 1831 she sailed from Plymouth, England for a long exploration voyage with one of the most famous scientists on board, Charles Darwin who, elaborated his famous Theory of Evolution. |
