On November 15, 1577 Francis Drake set sail on a secret mission to raid the Spanish port of Panama. His flagship was the Pelican, but on the voyage he renamed her the Golden Hind. During his three year journey, he captured 47,000 crowns worth of booty and became the first Englishman to sail around the world.
