The rivers and harbors of China are filled with junks and sampans. Almost as amazing as their numbers is the variety of types, evolved over centuries to meet the special needs of waterborne commerce. The main structural principal of junk design is a system of bulkheads interspersed with frames and timbers, forming a watertight hull.
