| America, under the command of Pilot Dick Brown, set out from New York for England in June 1851 to take in the regatta which was to be held on the 22nd of August around the Isle of Wight. She sailed without any compensation difference in tonnage or rigging. The prize offered was a 100 guinea cup. The AMERICA carried off an overwhelming victory over the English squadron. The 100 guinea cup, thereafter became "America's Cup" and still gives its name to the most important regatta in the world. |
